This article originally went out June 1, 2005 as one of my email-only newsletters. However, the story makes such a good point that I thought many would enjoy being able to read it on the Website.
This story really drives home two different points that you’ll also find reiterated elsewhere on ABCIncome.com:
1) Readers are leaders, and usually have bigger bank accounts. You never know what you might miss when you skim over something, or don’t read it at all.
2) If it seems too good to be true, maybe it is, or maybe it isn’t; why not check it out instead of just assume? There are some pretty easy methods for determining whether something is legitimate or not. In the case below, all that customers had to do was take a piece of paper to their bank. Or, they could have at least called their bank to inquire. But no one did.

we assumed that we had created something so innovative, so radical, and so different, that some would think it was, “too good to be true…”
Below is the true story of what happened…
Quite some years ago a major bank staged an interesting experiment. They offered thousands of their customers $2,000.00, cash, no strings attached.
As they predicted, not a single person claimed the offer, either because people didn't read it, or because they didn't believe it when they did. I’ve done similar “experiments” of my own, with similar results.
The major bank that staged the offer was trying to prove to government regulators that no one bothers to read the statements of, “Terms And Conditions,” that banks, credit card companies, and other financial institutions periodically send out to their customers or include in customers’ statements.
Up until that time banks were not required by law to send such statements, they just did so periodically as a routine part of doing business. In essence, it was one of those many areas where the government allowed the industry to regulate itself.
Then the government decided to require by law that banks include such statements of updated, “Terms And Conditions.” The banking industry protested. They said that being required to send out all of those statements more frequently was unnecessary because, “no one ever reads them anyway!” The industry also protested because being required to send out notices more frequently would drive up their postage and mailing costs.
One major bank proposed an experiment to demonstrate to the government that they were right, that few people ever bother to read those statements.
The bank sent out its usual, “Terms And Conditions,” along with thousands of customers’ monthly bank statements, with one difference. The, “Terms And Conditions,” included a brief sentence that said, simply, “Present this statement in person to any teller at any of our bank’s branches and we will give you $2,000.00 cash.” Every single customer to do that would have received the money, but not a single person did.
