Mentors, Mind Readers, And Treadmills…
While much of the information on ABCIncome.com is freely available, numerous articles and resources are only available to those enrolled in one of our business building programs. This is a variation on one of those articles.
For those enrolled in our programs I periodically like to share with them what some of their expectations should realistically be, both of their mentors and themselves.
In the same way that it is true that there is almost no such thing as a, “self made,” man or woman (we’ve all had help along the way), few of us manage to find our way through life without being exposed to the mentorship of someone else.
And a mentor certainly doesn’t always have to be associated with business or financial success. Our parents, teachers, friends, co-workers, ministers, and many other people mentor us throughout our lives in many different ways.
Sometimes we either seek out or come into contact with people who can mentor us on becoming more successful in particular areas of our lives. Maybe someone who wants to lose weight and/or get into better physical condition hires a personal trainer. Maybe someone who needs to get better grades in school seeks out the services of a tutor, etc.
In seeking out a mentor, or evaluating one you may already be associated with, it’s sometimes easy to overlook one of the most important things you should be looking for: and that is that you want someone who has successfully already been where you want to go!
In fact, here is a tip that will make it incredibly easy to remember and understand this point: simply replace the word, “mentor,” with the word, “guide,” and then see if the person whom you’ve chosen fits that description?
Whether Harrison Ford playing the adventurer and explorer Indiana Jones in a fictional movie, a group of real adventure seekers aiming to climb Mount Everest, or perhaps even planning a vacation to a popular tourist attraction, all can be well served by a knowledgeable and experienced guide.
Sounds like common sense advice, but in the home business industry, and especially the network marketing field, it’s easy to forget. Statistically, over 90 percent of the people who venture into network marketing never experience any significant success. If your sponsor, immediate upline, or others you’ve chosen to align yourself with fall into that same statistic, that doesn’t mean they can’t learn; but as wonderful a person as they may or may not be, you would be wise to also surround yourself with others who have already accomplished what you are trying to do. That could mean reaching further upline to draw on people with more experience, seeking third-party training such as that offered on ABCIncome.com, aligning yourself with people who are successful in general, or a combination of all of the above.
Once you’ve found the right mentor or mentors to help guide you along the path to achieving your goals, remember the do’s and don’ts. Do take advantage of all that person is willing to offer, without wearing out your welcome (especially if it’s someone who is lending his or her mentorship at no cost to you). Stick with and by that person UNTIL you reach your goals, or determine that you need to move on. Also, know what your roles are.
Everyone is unique in what they need from a mentor. Some people need knowledge, and some need motivation, while others need both. Unless the mentorship you are receiving is free, the first, knowledge, is likely to cost you much less than the second, motivation. In other words, it takes less time for a mentor to instruct you on how to achieve your goals, than to actually hold your hand and take you there. Expect to pay more for the latter.
For example, you can get a membership at a gym for a fairly small monthly or yearly membership fee, and it may include some personal coaching. However, if you want to hire a personal trainer to come to your home or office to not only motivate you to get into or stay in shape, but to see that you do it, you are going to pay more.
It is no different when it comes to business training, motivation, mentorship, and personal coaching. Decide which fits your lifestyle, personality, and budget, and then be realistic about what your expectations are. If you are only paying a relatively small fee for a business training course then it is probably unrealistic to expect lots of handholding and unlimited personal time to be included. At the same time, if you know that you are someone who truly requires more prodding and handholding, then plan accordingly and expect to pay more.
For example, a basic business seminar or course might range in cost from less than one hundred dollars to several thousand, with not much in the way of personal coaching to be expected. In contrast, close instruction or one-on-one time with some top business trainers and consultants can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars an hour, and up to as much as $25,000 for a single seminar.
That’s why the training offered on ABCIncome.com represents such a unique and exclusive value, because for less than the cost of many basic courses you can get a fair amount of close and one-on-one instruction as well as personal coaching for a fraction of what it might cost you elsewhere.
Remember too that no matter how good your mentor may be it is probably not fair to expect him or her to be able to read your mind. By that I mean that it is not uncommon for someone to sign up for some kind of business training and then sit by their phone expecting for their newfound mentor to call to tell them what to do. Whether with college classes, buying a new car, or weekly trips to the grocery store, few of us expect calls on a regular basis afterward asking us, “so, how is it going?” Remember that your mentor may have dozens, hundreds, or even many thousands of other people that he or she is working with at the same time as you, not to mention family and personal responsibilities.
Unless you’re paying a premium price for the kind of handholding mentioned earlier then it’s probably going to be up to you to stay plugged into and in tune with your mentor. When you have a question or a need, when maybe things don’t seem to be going just right, or whatever the case may be, it’s up to you to get in touch with your mentor, as they may have no way of knowing what your needs are otherwise.
And remember that any good, proven business tool is very much like a treadmill or other piece of exercise equipment. Assuming that you’ve chosen training, a mentor, and/or a personal coach wisely (determined by how well it has worked for others), then it will probably work reliably in helping you to achieve your goals, AS LONG AS YOU USE IT…
Hop on a good quality treadmill, push the Start button, and with great reliability the belt is very likely to start moving, and your feet along with it, and taking you where you want to go. Continue to use it, and you are almost guaranteed to see results. You will be fitter, trimmer, and healthier.
That said, there are literally millions of dollars of perfectly good exercise equipment in basements, garages, and spare rooms all around the county doing little more than sitting around collecting dust. It’s not up to the salesperson who sold it, or the store, or the manufacture to try to make anyone use it, that’s up to the individual. For those who need that kind of extra push, that’s where a personal trainer or coach comes in.
Lastly, once your hard work and effort starts paying off and you are seeing more success and more money in your bank account, don’t stop! Many people make the mistake of cutting back on whatever it is they did to start achieving that success to begin with. And, when they do, they often see their earnings, and their bank balance, start dwindling as a result.
So, remember, until you have demonstrated to yourself that you can sustain your newfound level of success, for at least three months for example, you would probably be wise to remain plugged into the same resources that you used to get you there. It’s really that simple. If you cut back on the training, personal coaching, reading, listening to tapes, or whatever it was that helped you achieve greater success, and your results start to wane, then it means that you should stay with it!
Ultimately, especially if you are involved in an opportunity that allows you to earn residual income, your goal should be to be able to step away from your business for days, weeks, even months at a time, and still have it earning money for you when you come back to it. Don’t stop until you get there, as it is a very nice place to be! And a nice thought to end on :)
